More than twenty workers from Toronto Hydro left for Ottawa to help restore power to homes and other critical infrastructure following the deadly weekend storm.

A major thunderstorm swept across much of southern and eastern Ontario on Saturday, resulting in 10 deaths and power outages for thousands of residents.

In Ottawa, four hydro transmission towers were destroyed, causing power outages for tens of thousands of homes.

After five days, nearly 60,000 people are still without power. In a statement, Toronto Hydro said its partners in Ottawa made a formal request for assistance with the storm, and they responded to the call; as a result, 26 people left for Ottawa on Wednesday morning.

Toronto Hydro spokesperson Russell Baker said, "We have seen the severe damage caused by Saturday’s storm across the province."

"Thanks to the dedication of our crews and the patience of citizens, we have made significant progress in home restoration efforts; at the peak of the storm, Hydro One alone reported that 500,000 people experienced power outages.

The number of fallen poles seems to be increasing, and Hydro One said on Wednesday that more than 1,600 poles have been broken along with countless trees and wires.

Due to the severity of the damage, restoration efforts are expected to continue for several days." Toronto Hydro said that about 110,000 people in the city were without power immediately after the storm, but power has been restored to about 99.8 percent of those affected.
