U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken called on Wednesday for the "immediate release" of Niger's President Mohamed Bazoum, as members of the presidential guard besiege the palace in an attempt to coup the president.
Blinken said: "I spoke with President Bazoum earlier and made it clear to him that the United States strongly supports him as the democratically elected President of Niger," demanding his "immediate release," according to Al Arabiya citing AFP.
It is noted that a group of presidential guard members announced late Wednesday the ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum, in a statement read by one of them on national television in the capital, Niamey, on behalf of the "National Council for the Protection of the Homeland".
