The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Sudan and Head of the Mission, "Volker Perthes," emphasized the need to immediately halt all military operations and mobilizations to alleviate the suffering of the affected populations. He called on the warring parties to return to dialogue to settle their differences.
According to the United Nations Information Center, the United Nations Mission in Sudan expressed its concern regarding the recent increase in violence in South Kordofan and West Kordofan, which had previously avoided large-scale military confrontations in populated areas over the past months.
The United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan ( UNITAMS ) stated in a release that reports indicated parts of Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan, were recently bombarded by the SPLM (Sudan People's Liberation Movement), followed by heavy shelling and armed clashes between the movement and the Sudanese Armed Forces, leading to the displacement of local residents and injuries among civilians.
UNITAMS stated that the city of Al-Obeid is experiencing unrest due to the escalation of fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, mentioning that government offices, banks, as well as United Nations and non-governmental organization offices have been looted, but fighting has ceased and calm has returned to the city thanks to the efforts of local tribal leaders.
The mission urged all military parties to refrain from actions that could exacerbate the conflict and to ensure the protection of civilian populations and infrastructure. It also stressed the need to encourage and support peaceful initiatives by local leadership, similar to what occurred in Al-Obeid.
