The New Democratic Party (NDP) and the Bloc Québécois called on Trudeau's government to impose sanctions on Azerbaijan in response to its military incursion into Nagorno-Karabakh last week - an event that prompted nearly 30,000 Armenians to flee the disputed territory.
“We recognize that Canada does not have a major role in this [geographical] area,” said Heather McPherson, the NDP's foreign affairs critic, to CBC News. She added, “It is something we can do, it is something the Canadian government must do, to show our frustration and to show that we see civilians being targeted.”
He and NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice also wrote a joint letter last week to Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly urging for the sanctions to be imposed.
