The local police in the Greater Toronto Area and Vancouver said they have increased patrols near Jewish places of worship. They added that they are aware of threats on social media directed at the Jewish community in Canada and are urging the public to remain on high alert.

"Now is the time to increase vigilance," stated the RCMP in a statement issued this Thursday, following: "We will not tolerate any form of intimidation, harassment, or harmful targeting of communities or individuals in Canada."

The national police force also stated that anyone feeling threatened online or in person should contact local police.

The statement said that any threats directed at Canadian citizens are taken seriously and investigated as necessary.

This police warning comes at a time of heightened tension due to devastating attacks on Israeli civilians by Hamas over the weekend and a rise in violence in the region as Israel strikes Gaza.

For his part, Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc said he has been in contact with RCMP leadership regarding concerns within the Jewish community.

In response to the war between Israel and Hamas, Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw stated that the service is increasing patrols at cultural centers, places of worship, and schools throughout the city, despite the absence of credible threats at this time. The police are also launching two command posts where officers can be easily accessed.

Also, in a press release issued on Wednesday, Toronto Police stated they are aware of global online threats circulating regarding events that may take place on Friday. A former leader of Hamas has called for protests to be organized worldwide on Friday, according to a report from Reuters.
