A new security gate is being tested at Toronto Pearson International Airport to begin operation within the next two weeks. The scanner was developed by Liberty Defense, a security company whose mission is to identify hidden weapons in highly crowded areas, and it will be tested in multiple areas of the airport starting Tuesday. Pearson will be the first airport in Canada to test the new system. The gate will also use a technology called HEXWAVE, which involves 3D radar imaging and low-frequency radio signals to detect and identify hidden metallic and non-metallic weapons and other threats. Also, individuals walking through these scanners will not have to remove any clothing or empty their pockets, as the update will show those passing through the gate either a green light allowing them to proceed or a red light indicating a potential threat. In the same context, Bill Fryan, CEO of Liberty Defense, told CTV News Toronto last February that the system can differentiate between personal items like a cellphone, wallet, or a set of keys, and an object representing a threat such as a knife, pistol, or pipe bomb. In a press release issued Tuesday, Fryan said that HEXWAVE will provide an additional layer of security at airports, especially at entrances and around other airport perimeters. Also, he said in a statement: "We are pleased to work with (Toronto's Greater Airport Authority) as they continue to take an innovative and forward-looking approach to security and customer experience." Additionally, HEXWAVE is being tested at a major international airport in the United States, a Major League Baseball stadium, a university, and a Hindu temple.
