Starting from 2026, one-fifth of SUVs, passenger cars, and trucks sold in Canada must be electric under new regulations proposed by Canadian Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault, with the mandate reaching 60% of all sales by 2030, rising to 100% by 2035.
To avoid any penalties, importers and manufacturers must comply with these measures, as part of the roadmap set to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 across all sectors, achieving a reduction equivalent to 40 to 45% compared to 2005.
Ontario ranks third in electric vehicle sales, although it is currently experiencing a sharp decline in these sales, accounting for 5.5% of new electric vehicle registrations.
