The South African government urged the country's farmers today, Tuesday, to intensify biosecurity measures following an outbreak of avian influenza that resulted in the death of more than 2.6 million birds.
BBC reported today, Tuesday, citing a statement issued by the Ministry of Agriculture on Monday, that 6 out of 9 provinces in the country were affected by the virus's subtypes "50 HPAI H7" and "10 HPAI H5".
The ministry stated that poultry producers must immediately notify state veterinarians of any suspected cases of the disease.
It is noted that South Africa is one of the main poultry-producing countries in the African continent.
