On Sunday, the minimum wage in Saskatchewan will rise to $14 an hour.

This increase was set at one dollar above the provincial minimum wage in May 2022, when the government stopped using the indexing formula and pledged to raise it to $15 an hour by October 2024.

Despite this increase, the wage remains the lowest in Canada, falling short of New Brunswick by 75 cents.

For his part, Labour Relations Minister Don McMorris said in a press release: "Other forms of support to assist minimum wage earners include the basic personal tax exemption, child tax credit, and low-income tax credit in Saskatchewan."

Meanwhile, the Canadian food banks' poverty index barely rated Saskatchewan.

As in a survey released this month, the non-profit organization focused on food security explained how high inflation has impacted low-wage earners in Saskatchewan.

Canadian food banks reported that nearly half of participants in Saskatchewan felt worse off compared to last year, with 36 percent of people spending more than a third of their income on housing.

The Canadian food bank also added that just over a quarter of people surveyed in Saskatchewan were unable to afford items considered essential for a reasonable standard of living.

The report stated that while the province is recording surpluses, there are opportunities to make strategic choices instead of pursuing short-term gains.
