Following another tense hearing with the board members of Hockey Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and members of parliament were frank on Wednesday in condemning their resistance to making changes they say are necessary. Trudeau, on his way to attend a Liberal Party gathering meeting, said, "It is baffling, everyone in Canada has lost trust in the game of hockey. It is not surprising that regional organizations are questioning whether they want to continue supporting an organization that does not understand how serious the situation they contributed to is." The Hockey Quebec board also passed a motion on Tuesday night, indicating that it no longer believes Hockey Canada is capable of changing hockey culture under its current structure. Federal Sports Minister Pascale Saint-Onge told reporters on Wednesday that she believes Hockey Quebec's decision "sends a message to the leaders in the organization who keep their jobs, that Hockey Canada is not theirs." For several months, federal politicians have been examining how Hockey Canada handles alleged sexual assaults and pays lawsuit settlements, with all parties calling for senior leadership changes and full transparency with a clear plan for reform.
