A polling station in Vancouver was temporarily closed on election morning due to a power outage. According to tweets from the City of Vancouver, John Oliver Secondary School was affected by the power outage, making it unavailable to voters. The polling station opened at 8 a.m., and BC Hydro confirmed the power outage in the area to CTV News Vancouver after about 30 minutes. During the closure, voters were redirected to Sir William Van Horne Elementary School and the Sir Richard McBride Annex to complete their voting. Also, a notice from the city stated that John Oliver Secondary School reopened at 11:05 a.m. As a result of the temporary closure, the city announced that the polling station, which was scheduled to close like all other polling stations in the city at 8 p.m., would remain open until 9:05 p.m., approximately an hour longer. In the same regard, BC Hydro said the outage is scheduled work starting October 8 to replace a power pole in the area, and Crown also added that it is trying to give customers—including municipalities—as much notice as possible about service interruptions. Likewise, a company spokesperson said in a statement sent by email: “When it was identified that the polling site was affected by this work, we abandoned the job as quickly as possible and safely,” adding that the power pole replacement work will be rescheduled soon. The spokesperson continued that they apologize for the inconvenience this outage caused to anyone trying to vote today. Also, according to BC Hydro’s power outage list, the outage was planned in the area to complete work on Crown equipment. The outage list indicated that the power was expected to be off in the area until 5:30 p.m.
