Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre benefited from many supporters, as well as former rivals, to form a crowded shadow cabinet of 51 critics and 20 assistant critics on Wednesday, just over a month after his election. The main position of finance critic goes to Jasraj Singh Hallan,
the Member of Parliament from Alberta who was first elected in 2019 and supported Poilievre during the leadership race and will be responsible for putting the government’s feet to the fire on inflation and the cost of living crisis.
Poilievre appointed former leadership rival and Ontario MP Lizele Louis as critic for infrastructure and communities, in response to calls from former opposition leader Stockwell Day to include her in the new leader’s shadow cabinet.

Ontario MP Scott Aitchison, who was also a leadership candidate, was appointed critic for housing, diversity, and inclusion – another priority for the new leader who has been constantly speaking about the housing crisis that leaves many young people unable to buy a home. Quebec MP Gérard Deltell, who supported Jean Charest in the leadership race, became Poilievre’s critic for environment and climate change. Longtime Poilievre supporters Shannon Stubbs and Mark Strahl became critics for natural resources and transportation, respectively.
Stephanie Kusi, also one of the leader’s strongest supporters, became the shadow minister responsible for the Treasury Board. Michelle Rempel Garner, who supported Brampton mayor Patrick Brown in the race, did not secure a position in Poilievre’s shadow cabinet.
