Ottawa grants 1.1 billion dollars over five years to First Nations communities in Quebec to help fund education.
The agreement signing ceremony was held on Thursday in the Mohawk area of Kahnawake south of Montreal.
The agreement is the result of 10 years of negotiations between Ottawa and the First Nations Education Council.
The funds will be allocated to building culturally aligned educational programs for about 5800 children in 22 communities.
It will also fund school transportation and the hiring and training of over 600 teachers and other school staff.
The First Nations Education Council, representing eight First Nations in Quebec, says the agreement will allow the communities to take full responsibility for their schools.
