The Ontario government has approved a bill allowing private clinics to perform more surgeries covered by the OHIP program, while advocates warn of potential legal action.
Bill 60, also known as the Your Health Act, was passed by Doug Ford's government yesterday Monday at Queen's Park and will come into effect once it receives royal assent.
The legislation was first introduced in February by Health Minister Sylvia Jones, who argued the need to reduce the significant surgical backlog in the province.
Jones said on February 21: "People should not have to wait months to be diagnosed, and if necessary, to undergo surgery."
Based on this legislation, for-profit and non-profit clinics will be allowed to perform cataract surgeries, MRI and CT scans, gynecological surgeries, and eventually, knee and hip replacements under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan.
