Multiple media sources said that Ontario will end the mask mandate in most public places and boarding schools on March 21.
According to media sources, the province will end mandatory masks everywhere except hospitals, congregate care settings, and long-term care systems by March 21.
Public transit users may still need to wear masks after this date.
Ontario's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Kieran Moore, will provide his last scheduled public update on the COVID-19 pandemic at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, as he still has to determine what will happen to COVID-19 vaccine mandates imposed on sectors including post-secondary.
The province still records dozens of COVID-19 deaths weekly, despite the death rate declining from its peak in late January.
The limited access to PCR tests for over two months means the province is not documenting up to 90% of new cases each day.
This rate indicates that the province is still witnessing between 12,000 and 20,000 new COVID-19 cases daily.
Infectious disease specialist Dr. Isaac Bogoch said it is premature to lift mask mandates.
He added: "I think based on where we are in Ontario, it would make sense to wear masks in indoor places."
For his part, Tory said, "The current city mask bylaw expires in April, but a new measure before city council today will allow them to easily end the mandate on March 21."
He added, "What is really important is that we have a consistent and unified policy across Ontario."
Tory said the TTC board will have the freedom to make its own decision for public transit users in Toronto.
