Ontario abandons plan to cancel the Peel region...

The province abandoned its plan to divide the Peel region, and Premier Doug Ford's government withdrew its plan less than a year after its announcement.

Housing and Municipal Affairs Minister Paul Calandra issued this announcement on Wednesday, saying his government will introduce new legislation in 2024 to reset the mandate of the Peel Transition Board to focus on improving regional services such as police, paramedics, and public health, instead of division.

The solution must come in 2025...

Ford announced in May that Peel Region would be dissolved in January 2025 through the Hazel McCallion Act, named after the former mayor who served Mississauga for 36 years. McCallion passed away in January at the age of 101.

The legislation will allow the province to dissolve the region, making the Cities of Mississauga and Brampton and the Town of Caledon independent municipalities.

Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie, the newly elected regional Liberal leader, supports the plan, while Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown strongly opposes it. Caledon Mayor Annette Groves also encouraged the province to reconsider this dissolution.

The Ontario government and the appointed Transition Board were reportedly surprised by the cost of the dissolution and the fact that it could cause significant tax increases in the three municipalities, according to a source familiar with the discussions to CBC News.
