Researchers at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China discovered that eating nuts reduces the risk of death due to type 2 diabetes.
The Journal of Nutrition indicates that the researchers studied and analyzed data from participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2014). During the health follow-up period of 35,632 participants, 1,174 of them died.
According to the researchers, increased consumption of nuts was associated with a lower risk of death from all causes, including type 2 diabetes, where it became clear that the more a person consumed nuts, the lower the risk. Based on this, they made adjustments for lifestyle, diet, duration of diabetes, and hemoglobin A1C levels.
The researchers found that consuming a serving of nuts instead of a serving of red meat, processed meat, refined grains, eggs, or dairy products led to an 18-22 percent reduction in the risk of death from all causes.
According to the researchers, this effect may be related to reduced inflammation in the body. This assessment is based on the level of C-reactive protein (CRP) in the blood. Inflammation is common in people with type 2 diabetes and is a risk factor for heart disease and cancer.
