Local authorities in New York declared a state of emergency in several areas on Friday following heavy rainfall that caused delays in domestic and international flights, as well as a halt to train services.

The rain, which began falling late Thursday in the northeastern United States, caused water levels to rise at New York train stations, leading to a suspension of operations, according to a reporter from "Sky News Arabia."

Local and international flight schedules were also delayed, and the departure of some planes was postponed in conjunction with a warning issued by authorities regarding transportation safety.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced via the platform "X," previously known as "Twitter," a state of emergency in New York and Long Island east of the metropolitan area and in the Hudson Valley, due to "heavy rainfall."

Images also showed cars struggling on waterlogged roads and streets completely blocked due to the water rising to vehicle window levels.

Water partially flooded major subway stations in the metropolitan area, and several central lines in Brooklyn were closed. The operating company stated via "X": "We continue to remove floodwater from several stations in Brooklyn and Manhattan."

LaGuardia Airport also announced that all access to terminal "A" is currently closed.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service, the severe weather is caused by a low-pressure system along the central Atlantic coast, drawing moist air from the ocean "which leads to heavy rainfall in northern and eastern areas."

New York authorities take these floods seriously, after Hurricane Ida caused the deaths of 13 people in September 2021 and many others in the area, most of whom were trapped in basements of homes that had been converted into apartments in the massive city facing a severe housing crisis.
