The National Party calls on the federal government to take steps to address "inflation" and the rising cost of grocery stores, as Thursday will be the day of opposition by the National Democratic Party, meaning that the party will present a proposal of its choice for MPs to discuss and then vote on later. In general, these proposals are efforts by opposition parties to push the government to act on issues they consider urgent and may not be at the top of the agenda. The New Democrats have also decided to highlight grocery store giants who made "huge profits last year," while grocery costs are rising, and workers' wages are not keeping pace with inflation. They call on the government to "acknowledge that corporate greed is a major driver of inflation, and take further action to support families during this cost-of-living crisis." Specifically, the National Democratic Party wants to force CEOs and big companies to "pay their share" by closing tax loopholes and launching a "reasonable and fair food strategy" to confront "corporate greed" and support a House committee study calling on grocery CEOs to testify about "rising food prices and the role of greedflation." The last point refers to the successful push by National Democratic Party MP Alistair MacGregor, in cooperation across all parties, to have the Agriculture and Agrifood Committee in the House conduct a study on grocery costs and inflation in the food supply chain. As part of this work, MPs are expected to invite industry stakeholders including grocery CEO managers, economists, and farmers. Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, when participating in the debate, said that although there are elements of the proposal he agrees with, he said it does not fully explain addressing the problem, because he sees that the government contributes to the rising cost of living.
