The 44th Moscow International Film Festival opened on Friday with low foreign representation amid the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
The festival president Nikita Mikhalkov, director of the Oscar-winning film Burnt By The Sun, rejected that, saying: "The number of stars coming doesn’t matter, I care about the people who come, because they are interested in meeting us."
He added: "These days, the heroes are in Donbas," referring to the industrial heart of Ukraine, "this is where the new elite and new heroes are born."
The festival opened with the premiere of a long-awaited Russian historical epic titled "Land of Legends" directed by Anton Megerdichev.
