Mississauga City Council voted to lift the mandatory mask bylaw in order to align with provincial laws.

This change is effective immediately. The mandatory face mask bylaw in the city was originally set to expire on March 31.

Mayor Bonnie Crombie of Mississauga said in a tweet: "The council unanimously voted to lift the mask bylaw at our first meeting since the province lifted its mandate." "I am confident that residents will respect each other's choices."

On Tuesday, Burlington City Council took a similar step by voting to repeal the internal mandatory mask bylaw and end the state of emergency.

Ontario province lifted its mandate on Monday, as masks are no longer required in most indoor public places, including schools, child care settings, and retail locations.

Mask requirements will remain in effect for public transit, long-term care, retirement homes and other healthcare settings, community care settings, shelters, prisons, and homes for individuals with special disabilities. The mask rules for all remaining systems will end on April 27.

Last week, the province's Chief Medical Officer rejected proposals to extend the mask mandate in schools in multiple areas, including the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), supporting staff and students' requests to adhere to provincial guidelines.
