The Canada Revenue Agency says that 120 people have been terminated for claiming federal COVID-19 benefits while employed there.
The CRA is reviewing nearly 600 cases where current employees received the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit – or CERB – during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The benefit amounted to $2,000 a month for Canadians who lost their jobs or had their pay reduced due to public health restrictions.
It is worth mentioning that the CRA said in July it laid off 20 employees as a result of the CERB investigation, but it now claims this number has risen to 120.
It was found that CERB claims were legitimate in 30 cases, such as employees with temporary or student contracts.
The tax agency says it refers cases suspected of criminal activity to the police, and in August, a former CRA employee was arrested and charged with fraud for allegedly collecting nearly $20,000 in government benefits during the coronavirus.
