Israel condemned Canada and Sweden's resumption of their funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
Israel confirmed that the decisions by Canada and Sweden to resume funding after "receiving intelligence information that UNRWA staff participated in the October 7 attack, and before completing the work of investigation bodies and publishing their findings, is a grave mistake and constitutes implicit approval and support by (Ottawa and Stockholm), to disregard the involvement of UNRWA staff," according to the "Times of Israel" newspaper today, Sunday.
The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that the resumption of UNRWA funding will not change the fact that the organization is part of the problem and will not be part of the solution in the Gaza Strip.
The ministry added: "Israel calls on the governments of Canada and Sweden to stop funding and not support an organization that includes hundreds of Hamas members among its ranks."
The Swedish government had stated that it intends to resume financial support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) affiliated with the United Nations.
The government in the Swedish capital Stockholm announced yesterday, Saturday, that it decided to allocate 200 million kronor (approximately 17.7 million euros) to the UN agency, indicating that this decision was made due to the critical humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and in light of new agreements.
The Swedish decision to resume funding the agency follows a similar decision made by Canada.
Johan Forssell, Minister for International Development Cooperation in the Swedish government, said that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is devastating and the needs are urgent.
Meanwhile, the Canadian government officially confirmed that it intends to resume its funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
Development Minister Ahmed Hussein said in a statement the day before yesterday, Friday, that Canada decided to resume payments to the relief organization due to the "catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza."
The UNRWA agency faced strong criticism from Israel, which accused some UN agency staff of supporting Hamas in the October 7 attack, and the UN Secretary-General António Guterres promised a comprehensive clarification of these accusations.
The agency ended its cooperation with several employees.
Following Israel's accusations, several Western countries decided to temporarily stop their funding to the agency, among these countries were the biggest donors, the United States and Germany.
