A huge explosion occurred today, Monday, in one of the grain warehouses at the Derince port on the Sea of Marmara in Turkey, and it was felt throughout the city.

The Turkish news agency confirmed that the explosion happened in a silo belonging to the Turkish Agricultural Products Office and resulted in shattered glass in surrounding buildings, without announcing the incident or the reasons behind it.

The agency indicated that rescue and ambulance teams rushed to the scene at lightning speed, and according to reports, there is a limited fire that rescue teams are trying to control, and white smoke is rising from the explosion site, which indicates that no chemicals have ignited. Additionally, the dense smoke has begun to slightly dissipate.

The governor of Kocaeli province, Sardar Yavuz, stated that at least 10 people were injured due to the explosion that shook the grain silos near the "Derince" port in western Turkey, prompting authorities to initiate an investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident.

The governor added that the explosion occurred at around 02:40 PM on Monday (11:40 AM GMT), near silos belonging to the Turkish Grain Board.

He mentioned that initial assessments suggest that the explosion occurred due to the pressure of wheat dust during the transfer of wheat from a ship to the silos, explaining: "We have been informed that it is technically possible for an explosion to occur due to the pressure of wheat dust, but we are investigating every possible cause."

He stated that two of the injured are in critical condition and receiving treatment at the hospital.

The Ministry of Transport confirmed that no ships were damaged due to the explosion.
