Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre spoke about the pension discussion between Alberta and Canada, blaming the Prime Minister for the dispute and urging Albertans to stay in the Canadian Pension Plan or CPP.

Poilievre said in a statement that the divide today over the Canadian Pension Plan is a result of Justin Trudeau's "attack" on Alberta's economy, as his unconstitutional anti-development laws and painful carbon taxes have forced Albertans to find a way to reclaim some of their money.

Last month, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith released a long-awaited report from the consulting firm LifeWorks, which stated that if Alberta withdraws from the Canadian pension plan, it would be entitled to $334 billion - more than half of the fund's assets.

Smith has long urged Alberta to leave the Canadian Pension Plan (CPP) and told reporters after the release of the LifeWorks report that the pension plan in Alberta would be fairer and could make life more affordable for all Albertans.

This week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded with an open letter criticizing this claim, insisting that withdrawing from the Canadian Pension Plan would only lead to more uncertainty and instability.

Trudeau also attempted to remove Alberta from the CPC in a letter to Danielle Smith.

The Prime Minister stated that during times of high inflation, climate change, and war, political leaders should strive for certainty rather than instability. He pledged to challenge Smith’s plan through the Canadian Pension Plan (CPP).

He also said, "I have directed the Cabinet and officials to take all necessary steps to ensure that Albertans - and Canadians - are fully aware of the risks of your plan, and do everything in their power to ensure the Canadian Pension Plan remains intact."

In the same context, the statement from the Conservative leader mentioned that Alberta's Premier is fighting the government over pensions because the Liberal government imposed carbon taxes and unconstitutional laws against energy and other unfair wealth transfers in the province.

Poilievre stated, "I encourage Albertans to remain with the Canadian Pension Plan (CPP), adding that I will protect and secure the Canadian Pension Plan for Albertans and all Canadians by being a fair Prime Minister who will allow Alberta to develop its resources to secure their future."

Also, after Trudeau's open letter was issued, Smith responded with her own open letter in which she rejected Trudeau's characterization of the impact of Alberta's withdrawal from the Canadian Pension Plan (CPP).

Smith wrote to Trudeau: "It is unrealistic and inappropriate to instill fear in the hearts and minds of Canadian retirees regarding this issue."

She accused Prime Minister Trudeau of imposing additional costs on Albertans through the federal carbon tax and warned him against trying to prevent the province from leaving the Canadian Pension Plan.

She further wrote that any attempt to do so would be viewed as an attack on the constitutional and legal rights in Alberta, and would result in serious legal and political consequences.
