Two police officers were identified as killed during a shootout with a suspect inside a home in Innisfil, north of Toronto, Tuesday night. Police Chief John Van Dyke officially identified the deceased officers as Officer Devon Northrop, 33, and Officer Morgan Russell, 54, during a press conference this afternoon, Wednesday. Van Dyke added that Northrop had six years of experience with the South Simcoe Police, while Russell had 33 years of service experience. The police chief also stated: "This is a difficult time for us, as the entire police family is affected, along with emergency service personnel and even residents. Our immediate focus is on supporting our grieving members and their families." Authorities earlier said the two officers responded to a disturbance call at a home in the area of 25 Cedar Road and Ninth Line just before 8 p.m. The Special Investigations Unit stated there was an exchange of gunfire between a 23-year-old man and the two officers, adding that the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. In the same context, one officer was rushed to a hospital in Barrie by emergency means, where he later died. The police said in a statement Wednesday morning that the second officer was airlifted to a hospital in Toronto in critical condition, where he also died from his injuries. The Special Investigations Unit is currently investigating the case, and six investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to conduct their own investigation into the details surrounding the shooting of the officers. In addition, the Special Investigations Unit is examining the conduct of the deceased officers, which may have led to a person's death, serious injury, sexual assault, or the intentional discharge of a firearm at someone.
