The organizers of the original "Freedom Convoy" protest that paralyzed downtown Ottawa for three weeks in early 2022 said they will hold a new convoy to Winnipeg this winter.
In a Facebook post, Canada Unity shared a live video in which they announced that the "Global Unity Convoy" will be held in the capital of Manitoba from February 17 to 20, 2023.
In the video, Canada Unity founder James Bauder said they chose Winnipeg because it is the midpoint in Canada, adding: "People can come from the east coast and the west coast, and people will be able to travel across the country ... and we will meet in the middle, the heart of Canada."
The original "Freedom Convoy" had led a protest against COVID-19 vaccine mandates, public health protections, and the federal Liberal government in general.
Bauder said this upcoming convoy in Winnipeg will focus on "solutions for a better world for all Canadians," but he did not specify what that means.
Meanwhile, Ottawa Police Chief Eric Stapp said that the Ottawa Police Service will be ready to repeat the convoy protest, and officers have already contacted the organizers to remind them of the city's expectations regarding lawful assembly and the police and city's “firm stance.”
Additionally, Jodi Thomas, the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s national security advisor, told a parliamentary committee earlier this month that senior officials are also planning for the possibility of another convoy protest.
Thomas said Mike McDonald, Assistant Secretary to the Cabinet in the Privy Council Office, has already chaired meetings "to begin considering how we respond."
