The National Election Authority in Egypt announced on Monday that the presidential elections will be held from the 10th to the 12th of December 2023.

Expectations lean in favor of the current president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi despite the economic crisis, which includes record-high inflation and a shortage of foreign currency.

El-Sisi (68 years old) is eligible to run for a third term according to a constitutional amendment in 2019 that extended the presidential term from four years to six years, paving the way for him to remain in office until at least 2030.

The authority also stated that the results of the elections are expected to be announced on December 18, and in case a second round is needed, the final results will be announced by January 16 at the latest.

Although Sisi has not officially announced his candidacy, pro-government parties have launched a campaign that includes billboards throughout Cairo supporting his reelection.

Sisi was declared the winner in the elections of 2014 and 2018 with 97 percent of the votes. In 2018, he faced only one opponent, who was himself one of Sisi's strongest supporters, following the arrest of the main competitor and the withdrawal of other candidates, attributing this to intimidation tactics.

Additionally, four other candidates have expressed their intention to run this time, most notably former parliament member Ahmed Tantawy, who claims that security agencies have arrested some of his aides and prevented him from holding election events. Officials did not respond to his allegations.

Sisi, a former army leader, became president in 2014 after a year of ousting the democratically elected president Mohamed Morsi, who belonged to the Muslim Brotherhood, following protests against his rule.
