In the coming days, the New Democratic Party in Ontario is expected to take the first step in appointing an interim leader after Andrea Horwath resigned from her position earlier this month.

The party told CP24 that the party's convention will recommend Peter Tabuns, the longtime MPP for Toronto Danforth, for the role on Wednesday.

In the next few weeks, the party's executive body will make a formal recommendation to the provincial council and a vote will be held. No other names have been submitted so far.

Tabuns has served as MPP for Toronto Danforth since 2006 and has acted as the official opposition spokesperson on energy and climate issues.

He ran for party leadership in 2009 but lost to Horwath, who held the position for 13 years. Hours after the June 2 election results were announced, Horwath stood before her supporters and declared that the time had come to "pass the torch."

While retaining their position as the official opposition in Ontario, the New Democratic Party was unable to make significant gains on election day, losing nine seats it had won four years earlier.
