Toronto city officials announced that the municipality will receive a $25 million donation to create a pedestrian walkway and give it a new artistic character as part of the massive Port Lands redevelopment project.
During an announcement at Sugar Beach on Tuesday, it was revealed that the Pierre Lassonde Family Foundation will spend $10 million on creating two major and permanent public art pieces in the project.
One of the featured designs will be implemented by a "leading Canadian artist" and the other by a global artist.
On the other hand, officials said that up to $15 million will be used to establish a new non-profit organization that will be tasked with managing the artistic pedestrian walkway project - which will be called the Lassonde Art Trail - and coordinating it with contemporary designs by artists. The purpose of the project is to raise similar funds to ensure the continuity and quality of the artwork created for this project in the long term.
The walkway will be located on part of Villiers Island.
Despite the announcement of the donation, Toronto city staff still need to finalize agreements with the Pierre Lassonde Family Foundation. If approvals are received, the foundation will appoint an executive director for the new project and hold an international competition to select artists for the two new featured pieces.
