A moving memorial featuring more than 200 pairs of small shoes still fills the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery a year after its first installation.
Those behind the tribute purchased and placed 215 pairs of children's shoes on the steps facing Robson Square after the discovery of graves at the country's largest school.
The installation was placed by local artist "Tamara Bell" and volunteers.
Regarding how long the shoe memorial will remain, the City of Vancouver told CTV News that it will have an answer next week.
Monday marks the first anniversary of the announcement of preliminary search results by ground-penetrating radar. The local First Nation newspaper said the search at the site of the "Kamloops Indian Residential School" confirmed what was already known: hundreds of children buried on the site, children taken from their families and never returned home.
Those conducting the search say that what was discovered in the 7000 square meter search area was about 200 serious cases.
The only way to know what is buried is to exhume the bodies. However, the initial discoveries match stories of survivors who described being asked to dig graves in the area when they were six years old.
Currently, efforts are focused on expanding the initial search area. There is still 650,000 square meters remaining.
