Officials reported that a passenger bus veered off the road and crashed into a small canal along a road in central Turkey on Monday, resulting in the deaths of 12 people and injuries to 19 others.
The governor of Yozgat province in central Turkey, Muhammad Ali Ozkhan, stated that the bus driver lost control of the vehicle, which crossed into the opposite lane and then slid into the canal near the city of Yozgat, the provincial capital.
The bus was traveling from Sivas—about 240 kilometers east of Yozgat—to Istanbul.
Ozkhan also mentioned that 11 passengers died at the scene, while one passenger later died in the hospital.
He added that the injured are being treated at nearby hospitals, noting that one of them is in critical condition.
Ozkhan further stated that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident, adding that it appears to be the result of the driver's "negligence."
