The Canadian Statistics Authority has revealed its latest statistics on domestic violence, in which reports confirmed an increase in the rate of domestic violence in Canada for the fifth consecutive year. In the same context, the report clarified that 127,082 victims are subject to domestic violence up to the moment, as reported by security agencies, excluding unreported cases. Also, the accused in domestic violence crimes were mostly spouses, parents, siblings, and family members in general during the year 2021. Additionally, girls represent 69% of the domestic violence victims. The report also revealed that women and girls are subjected to persecution and domestic violence at a higher rate than men, representing 457 female victims compared to 212 male victims per 10,000 victims. It is noteworthy that the police reported 114,132 victims of physical and psychological violence and partner assault, whether spouses or separated, in 2022. Furthermore, the penalty for conviction of domestic violence in Canada can reach imprisonment from 5 to 10 years. In some cases of minor assault by first-time offenders, it is possible to receive a sentence that does not include imprisonment or the inclusion of the accused's name in the criminal record.
