Residents of the Leighton area fled their homes amid unprecedented wildfires in British Columbia, Canada.
Authorities in Leighton ordered the evacuation of 14 people late on Friday, and Niakia Hannah, the regional official, told Reuters that by yesterday (Sunday), the uncontrolled fire was 300 meters away from one of the reserves and had spread over a steep slope, hindering firefighting efforts.
Canada is experiencing an unprecedented season of wildfires, resulting in more than 100,000 square kilometers ignited, a number that is likely to increase, which is estimated to be four times the average area that catches fire during wildfire seasons.
Hannah stated that a fire that broke out in 2021 destroyed a large part of the village adjacent to the Leighton area, as well as administrative buildings and 41 homes. The area had hoped to begin reconstruction efforts in the fall of this year.
Meanwhile, authorities ordered about 800 residents in British Columbia to leave their homes.
