Canada bans "Huawei" from participating in 5G networks

Canada announced on Thursday that it is banning the Chinese company Huawei Technologies and the other Chinese company ZET from participating in the country’s 5G wireless networks, according to CTV News.

Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry "François-Philippe Champagne" and Minister of Public Safety "Marco Mendicino" announce this at 4:15 PM in Ottawa.

The federal government has long faced pressure to ban the Chinese telecom giant from fifth-generation telecommunications infrastructure due to security concerns.

The Liberals have promised for years that an announcement on this issue is forthcoming, citing the need to continue the process.

But many observers suspected that the major political decision was partly delayed due to China’s detention of "Michael Spavor" and "Michael Kovrig," which was largely seen as retaliation for the arrest of Huawei CEO "Meng Wanzhou" in Canada.

"Spavor" and "Kovrig" were released in September 2021 following the dropping of "Meng’s" extradition.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he would share Canada’s decision on what to do with Huawei "in the coming weeks."

Canada is the only remaining member of the "Five Eyes" intelligence alliance that has not yet banned or restricted Huawei from participating in the network.
