The Minister of Public Safety in British Columbia said that an automated alert system will be implemented in June to warn residents of dangerously high temperatures.

"Mike Farnworth" made the comment during a press conference in Vancouver with federal ministers where they outlined the response to wildfires and prevention funding.

"Alert Ready" is a tool used by governments across the country to broadcast warnings on radio and television stations, as well as other wireless devices.

"Farnworth" announced last week that the tool is ready to be used during floods and that it will be expanded to include wildfires in June.

The minister said there is more work to be done by health officials to establish heat warning criteria and added that launching the alert system in June has always been the government's intention and it will be implemented.

"Previously, we were prepared to deploy the alert system for tsunami waves, civil emergencies, and electrical alarms.

But we are now connected online for flood hazards and the system will go further to expand wildfire threats by early June and heat alerts at the same time."

In response to a question about the timeline, Farnworth said: "Our plan is ready by June."

The Coroners Service in British Columbia stated that last summer's extreme temperatures caused nearly 600 deaths.
