The Al-Azhar Al-Sharif commented on the protest demonstration near the Iraqi embassy in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, organized by Selwan Momika, an Iraqi citizen in Sweden, during which he tore a copy of the Quran and insulted the Iraqi flag.
Al-Azhar expressed in a statement "its condemnation and strong denunciation of the repeated provocations carried out by the Swedish authorities against our Islamic sanctities under the pretext of 'false freedom of expression'," stressing that "what the Swedish authorities are doing by continuing to grant permits to burn the Book of God - may He be exalted - reflects chaotic policies, abhorrent extremism, support for terrorism, and hostility towards Muslims everywhere."
Al-Azhar emphasized that "allowing these criminal terrorists to burn the Quran represents a crime against Islam and against religions and humanity, and is a disgrace to the face of these communities, which have shown through their practices that they are among the most racist and chaotic peoples, and the farthest from true freedom and respect for religions and peoples."
Al-Azhar called on "all Arab and Islamic peoples to continue boycotting all Swedish products in support of God and His noble Book, and that all free people of the world join this call," affirming that "any negligence in taking firm positions towards what Sweden produces is indeed support for these crimes, and encouragement for these criminals who display their hostility to the Book of God and the religion of Islam to continue their offenses, and support for these communities that know only materialism as a means and an end."
While urging the Arab and Islamic peoples to continue boycotting Swedish products, he called on "all Islamic and Arab countries to continue taking unified and serious positions towards the barbaric and anti-Islamic policies of Sweden, which does not respect religious sanctities and understands only the language of money and material interests."
