The "African Peace and Security Council" failed to reach an agreement regarding the coup in Niger and decided to hold another meeting without specifying its date on Monday.

This came hours after the military council in Niger announced its intention to trial President Mohamed Bazoum on charges of "high treason" and "endangering" the country's security.

In a statement read on national television, Colonel Major Amadou Abdurahman, a member of the military council that executed the coup against Bazoum, stated that "the Nigerien government has collected evidence to date to trial the ousted president and his local and foreign associates before the competent national and international bodies on charges of high treason and undermining Niger's internal and external security."

The ruling military regime in Niger condemned ECOWAS sanctions as "illegal, inhumane, and humiliating."

Amadou Abdurahman also stated that the people of Niger are "severely affected by the illegal, inhumane, and humiliating sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States, which even deprive the country of medicines, food supplies, and electricity."

They added that "all urgent measures are being taken to minimize the impact of the sanctions."
