The Canadian CBC News network has learned that the Canadian intelligence agency is actively investigating what it calls several "credible" assassination threats from Iran targeting individuals in Canada.
The Canadian Security Intelligence Service said it is aware that government entities from the Islamic Republic of Iran are monitoring and intimidating people inside Canada to silence those who speak out publicly against the regime.
U.S. Central Intelligence Agency spokesperson Eric Balsam said in a media statement to CBC News: "The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) is actively investigating numerous life-threatening threats from the Islamic Republic of Iran based on reliable intelligence."
"Ultimately, these hostile activities and foreign interference undermine the security of Canada and Canadians, as well as our values and democratic sovereignty."
This is the first time the agency has confirmed multiple ongoing investigations involving what it calls "deadly threats to Canadians and persons in Canada" originating from Iran.
Details were released to CBC News after the head of British domestic intelligence revealed on Wednesday that the United Kingdom is facing a major security threat from Iran, Russia, and China — countries the UK accuses of using violence and intimidation abroad to advance their interests.
Over the past two months, protesters have taken to the streets in Iran to protest against the regime. The massive demonstrations erupted following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was detained by the so-called morality police and died in custody after allegedly wearing the hijab improperly.
