The U.S. Department of State announced the appointment of David Satterfield as special envoy for humanitarian issues in the Middle East, leading U.S. efforts to urgently resolve the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.

The U.S. State Department stated: "President Biden has appointed former Ambassador David Satterfield as special envoy for humanitarian issues in the Middle East, and Special Envoy Satterfield will lead American diplomacy to urgently address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza."

Blinken said: "Special Envoy Satterfield will lead American diplomatic efforts to urgently resolve the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, including efforts to help provide lifesaving assistance to the most vulnerable and ensure the safety of civilians, in coordination with the United Nations and U.S. partners."

As U.S. Secretary of State noted, Satterfield will also oversee the humanitarian response to the recent prominent attacks carried out by Hamas on Israel, in addition to supporting the implementation of initiatives from the U.S. Agency for International Development.

According to Blinken, Satterfield is a professional diplomat with over 40 years of experience in countries including Syria, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, and Lebanon, having previously served as Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, and he has also actively supervised Palestinian-Israeli conflict issues at the State Department and the White House.

Last Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken went on a Middle East tour that includes Israel, Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt to discuss the escalation in the region.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin also arrived in Israel on October 13, where he announced the U.S. intention to provide more military aid to Israel.

The Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip continues for the ninth consecutive day, leaving more than 2,670 dead and nearly 10,000 injured, most of whom are children and women.

According to Palestinian Health Ministry statistics, nearly 1,000 children and 700 women have been killed due to Israeli airstrikes, and more than 2,000 children and 1,400 women have been injured in various ways.

The Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, announced the launch of Operation "Al-Aqsa Flood" at dawn on Saturday, October 7, 2023, firing more than 5,000 rockets from the Gaza Strip, while Palestinian fighters carried out qualitative operations by storming several border settlements and engaging in street battles with Israeli forces, killing and injuring a number of them, capturing several soldiers and settlers, and seizing Israeli vehicles.
