The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has begun storing containers at its facility in the Selimpasa municipality for use in emergencies, particularly in preparation for the potential Marmara earthquake in Istanbul, as reported by the Turkish newspaper Yeni Şafak on Thursday, July 20, 2023.
The newspaper indicated that the agency will deposit 5,000 containers and 80,000 tents at the facility established for this purpose in Selimpasa over the course of a month, noting that the aim of these measures is to provide housing for citizens in case of emergencies.
For his part, Tuzkan Boutchan, the Disaster Management official in Tekirdağ province, who is overseeing the unloading of containers at the site, said, "In the first phase, we brought 628 tents and a container home ready for use in disasters and emergencies that may occur in our country."
He continued, "We are close to providing containers in almost all regions of the country. The aim is to prepare containers that can be used in the easiest and fastest ways during emergencies."
