Thanks to the rise in remote work options around the world, people now have the choice to work from anywhere they want more than ever before.
You may have always dreamed of a long trip somewhere in Europe while continuing to work at the same time, which is known as Workation - working while traveling, but you were afraid of losing your job that allows you to enjoy a new culture during weekends only.
Toronto has just been ranked as the best in the world for Workation, according to a report by the International Workspace Group (IWG).
IWG stated in a press release: “The popularity of work trips has spread, as travelers work from overseas destinations to extend their holidays. Since hybrid working has become the actual working model for many, 88 percent of hybrid workers worked from anywhere last year, while three in five (57 percent) extended their vacations by working from abroad.
Additionally, 67 percent of workers surveyed by IWG said they believe they can perform their jobs effectively from abroad, while 71 percent said the only job they would consider is one that offers remote work flexibility.
Overall, this new report examined the best 25 cities for working while traveling based on nine sets of criteria ranging from the cost of food, transportation, and accommodation to annual sunshine hours and availability of flexible workspaces, with a total score of up to 90 points.
Below are the cities that Toronto outperformed in this list:
Toronto in Canada (58.5 / 90) and Barcelona in Spain (58.5 / 90, tied for first place)
Beijing in China (57.5 / 90)
Milano in Italy (57 / 90)
New York in the United States (56.5 / 90)
Rio de Janeiro in Brazil (55 / 90) and Amsterdam in the Netherlands (55 / 90, tied for sixth place) and Paris in France (55 / 90, tied for sixth place). Jakarta in Indonesia (55 / 90, tied for sixth place).
Lisbon in Portugal (54.5 / 90)
Toronto scored high in the accommodation and happiness categories, as well as the availability of flexible workspaces.
IWG wrote: “Canada's largest city offers a diverse experience for remote workers, with more than 25 percent of the city covered by forests and 18 percent designated for parks, providing ample green spaces to relax amidst the bustling urban environment.”
However, for those looking to choose a work destination based on more specific criteria, such as accommodation cost or sunny destinations, Rio de Janeiro and Jakarta received the best ratings in this list for monthly accommodation costs, while both Barcelona and New York won the largest number of sunny hours throughout the year.
