Amid the escalating Ukrainian-Russian war, the naval forces in Moscow received the largest nuclear submarine in the world called "Belgorod," which has the ability to create a tsunami and sink entire cities and was nicknamed the giant of the seas due to its size and capabilities.
The design of the giant submarine dates back to the Soviet era, and its official commissioning was postponed several times before it left a military factory at the beginning of this month. The submarine is of the K-329 Belgorod type, described as one of the largest submarines in the world, with a length of about 184 meters, and capable of carrying nuclear torpedoes.
This extraordinarily capable submarine may represent a card that influences the course of the war in Ukraine and the conflict between Russia and the West, according to experts.
The German newspaper "Die Welt" pointed out that the Belgorod submarine is named after a Russian city located 35 kilometers from the border with Ukraine and was assigned to the Russian Navy on July 8, 2022.
Officially, this giant submarine, which is 18 meters wide and 9 meters high and powered by two nuclear engines, is tasked with scientific exploration missions to participate in the development of a network of underwater sensors in the Arctic and to carry out rescue operations.
However, many observers believe that this submarine, which today is one of the largest and most powerful submarines in the world, could be used for espionage, military, and even sabotage purposes, such as targeting internet connection facilities deep in the oceans.
The Russian news agency TASS said that the Belgorod submarine has been equipped since 2019 and was supposed to be delivered to the Russian Navy in 2020 after a series of trials and tests, but the COVID-19 pandemic caused a delay.
American media said it is even larger than the Ohio, the American navy submarine, which is about 171 meters long.
The Belgorod submarine is a project revived after more than thirty years of research and development dating back to the Soviet era, as it recently came out of the Sevmash naval factory into the frozen waters of the White Sea in Severodvinsk.
The German newspaper "Die Welt" confirms that this submarine is capable of launching six "Poseidon" nuclear super-missiles, which may reach up to 24 meters in length, weigh one hundred tons, and are capable of carrying torpedoes with nuclear warheads, reaching targets up to 10,000 kilometers away. Therefore, it can theoretically reach coastal areas and cause - according to some analysts - devastating tsunamis.
American naval submarine expert H. Sutton mentioned on the specialized website Naval News that these giant nuclear torpedoes are "unique in human history," have terrifying destructive capabilities, and must not be underestimated.
But French General Dominique Trinquand, former commander of the French military mission to the United Nations, said: It is only an additional deterrent tool that enhances the impact of Russian naval military hardware. Trinquand confirms that the Belgorod submarine mainly has a media function: "We do not know its nuclear capabilities, nor do we know if it is a prototype, and we have no confirmed information if it actually operates."
Christopher Ford, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Non-Proliferation, said that Poseidon torpedoes are designed to flood American coastal cities with radioactive tsunamis.
A report issued by the U.S. Congressional Research Service in April stated that Poseidon torpedoes are intended as retaliatory weapons, designed to respond to an enemy after a nuclear attack on Russia.
However, there are doubts about the weapon and whether it will eventually be added to Russia's arsenal, as Hans Christensen, director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Union of Concerned Scientists for the American network, said: This technology is still under development, both the torpedo and the platform.
