According to the Government of Ontario, this grant is one of the largest grants in the province's history.

Another installment of funds provided by the Government of Ontario was announced on Friday to be granted to the new campus of Ottawa Civic Hospital

Prime Minister Doug Ford visited the new campus today to make the announcement, adding that the amount of $29.1 million coming from the provincial government is one of the largest planning grants in Ontario's history.

The additional funds will ensure that the hospital is one of the largest and most advanced academic research hospitals in Canada, improving access to care for patients and families in the Ottawa area and beyond.

Ford said, "After decades of neglect and underinvestment by previous governments, we are listening to the people of Ottawa and delivering the hospital they deserve." "This investment will ensure that the Ottawa Hospital can provide the kind of world-class care this growing region requires and will help build a more resilient healthcare system."

In 2019, the Government of Ontario granted $9 million to support the early planning of the new $multi-billion Civic campus.

The Ottawa Hospital has expanded the scope of this redevelopment, which is scheduled to include more than 100 additional beds, bringing the total number of new beds to over 300.

The province says these beds will help expand services, including intensive care and the development of a specialized rehabilitation center and referral center. It aims to ensure patients receive the care they need and that they can get care close to home.

The hospital is also in the midst of planning to add an "advanced" trauma center, a larger emergency department, an updated and expanded surgical wing, outpatient clinics, and integrated research and educational spaces to support the hospital's teaching and research missions.

Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Christine Elliott said, "Supporting the new and expanded campus at The Ottawa Hospital is a vital part of our government's plan to build a resilient healthcare system." "This investment – one of the largest planning and design grants in Ontario's history – will help patients and families access the care they need for generations to come."

The province is working with the hospital in the next phase of the planning process to identify programming and operational requirements and assess how the project can further help meet the healthcare needs of patients and families in the region.

Cameron Love, President and CEO of The Ottawa Hospital, said in a statement: "Our community is one of the fastest-growing communities in Ontario and Canada." "As a hospital, we must be able to meet the needs of our patients today and in the years to come, so that we are ready to provide world-class care when they need us."

Based on early planning, construction of the new hospital is estimated to begin in 2024, with improved timelines as planning progresses.

The Ottawa Hospital currently serves as one of the top teaching and research hospitals in Canada, serving 1.2 million people across Eastern Ontario.
