The European Commissioner for Digital Affairs Thierry Breton urged Alphabet, the parent company of Google, to be cautious about any "illegal content and misleading information" on YouTube regarding the Hamas attack.
In his latest messages to the CEOs of technology companies, which included a verbal exchange with Elon Musk on the platform X, Breton directed a message to Alphabet's CEO Sundar Pichai.
The message warning YouTube about the need to comply with the new "Digital Services Act" in the European Union was also published on the competing platform Bluesky (formerly Twitter).
The European Commissioner wrote in his message, "In the wake of the terrorist acts committed by Hamas against Israel, we are witnessing a wave of illegal content and misleading information being published in the European Union across certain platforms."
Breton also pointed out that YouTube, which is especially used by many children and teenagers, bears the responsibility of protecting its users from false propaganda and violent or harmful images.
This warning reflects previous messages directed earlier this week to Musk, Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, and TikTok's Shou Zi Chew.
