Minister of Immigration Marc Miller said he wants to make it easier for Indigenous peoples to cross the international borders that have divided their homelands and families for generations.
In an interview with CBC News, Miller stated that Canada must recognize that Indigenous peoples have the right to move freely across international borders. He added, "This is something I believe we need to fix as a country." It will take time. But this is one of my priorities.
First Nations, Métis, and Inuit are the Indigenous peoples of Canada who have their own languages, cultures, beliefs, and ways of life.
A senior government source also said that the government is considering issuing a ministerial directive and amending the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act to exempt Indigenous peoples whose traditional homelands are outside Canada from immigration requirements.
