Nearly 100 tenants from 1440 and 1442 Lawrence Avenue West are set to begin a rent strike today, Sunday, according to the York South Weston Tenants Union.

They claim that the property owner, Barney River Investments, has refused to address "serious building repairs while continuously raising rents above rent control limits."

Residents of Lawrence Avenue will also join the ranks of over three hundred tenants from 33 King Street and 22 John Street in Toronto who have been on a rent strike since June, protesting rent increases and ongoing construction in their buildings.

Together, the group will exceed 400 tenants, and according to the union, this action will make it the largest rent strike in Toronto's history.

Tenants are scheduled to announce the action publicly at 2 p.m. at the apartment complex.

CTV News has reached out to Barney River Investments for a statement in response to the tenants' claims.
