Local authorities said parts of a glacier collapsed today, Sunday, in the Italian Alps amid a record heatwave, while local media reported the death of at least six people.
The Trento provincial government said, "Rescue operations are underway following a large glacier collapse in which hikers lost their lives," adding that there may be a "large number" of injuries or deaths.
The avalanche occurred on Marmolada, a mountain over 3300 meters high in the eastern part of the Italian Alps, between the Trento and Veneto regions.
Veneto Governor Luca Zaia said the injured were taken to nearby hospitals in the towns of Belluno, Treviso, Trento, and Bolzano.
The exact number of casualties could not be immediately confirmed.
Zaia indicated that a heatwave in early summer in Italy caused temperatures on Marmolada to rise to 10 degrees Celsius on Saturday.
