In an unexpected move, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Wednesday his separation from his wife Sophie "after having many serious and difficult discussions."
According to Trudeau's official biography, they were married in 2005 and have 3 children.
Trudeau said on his official Instagram account: "Hello everyone, Sophie and I would like to inform you that we have made the decision to separate after having many serious and difficult discussions," and added: "As always, we will remain a close family with a deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build. For our children, we ask that you respect our privacy and theirs."
The office of the Canadian Prime Minister stated in a statement that Trudeau and Sophie "have entered into a legal agreement to ensure that all legal and ethical steps are taken regarding their decision to separate," and Trudeau's office requested "respect for the family's privacy."
