Britain has announced a move that could have a significant impact on the course of the Gaza war, as it decided to suspend 30 licenses for arms exports to Israel, amid growing concern over the use of these weapons in violation of international humanitarian law.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated on Monday that the UK would immediately suspend 30 licenses for arms exports out of 350 previously approved for Israel. This decision came after a two-month internal review, which showed that Israel, as an occupying power, had not fulfilled its obligation to provide essential supplies to the civilian population in Gaza, according to the AFP agency.
The UK is the latest country to change its position on arms sales to Israel, a step that could significantly affect Israel's military stance, which relies on imported weapons, especially in the ongoing assault on Gaza that has lasted for 11 months and resulted in the deaths of over 40,000 people.
Other countries that have taken steps against Israel
Italy
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced last January the decision to not send further weapons to Israel after October 7. Although Italy is the third largest supplier of military equipment to Israel, it contributes less than 1% of Israel's total arms imports, according to The Guardian.
Spain
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares reported in January that Spain had stopped selling arms to Israel since October 7, and followed this in May with a ban on docking ships loaded with weapons to Israel in Spanish ports.
Canada
The Canadian Parliament approved in March a halt to future military sales to Israel, and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly confirmed to the Toronto Star that arms shipments would stop.
Belgium
Belgian authorities imposed restrictions on arms sales to Israel and launched a campaign to support a ban at the EU level.
The Netherlands
A Dutch court issued a ruling in February to halt the supply of parts for F-35 fighter jets to Israel, due to concerns over serious violations of international humanitarian law.
Countries that have not halted arms supplies to Israel
America
Despite the controversy surrounding arms sales, the United States does not disclose details of its arms trade. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Washington is Israel's largest military supporter, providing about 69% of its weapons from foreign sources. US President Joe Biden criticized Israel's behavior, describing its campaign as "indiscriminate," but he refused to stop the sale of bombs. In May, the US administration paused shipments of heavy bunker-busting bombs to Israel, but resumed some deliveries in July.
Germany
According to The Guardian, about 30% of arms exports to Israel come from Germany, including man-portable anti-tank weapons and ammunition for automatic or semi-automatic firearms.
Denmark
Denmark contributes to the F-35 program and resists lawsuits from several human rights groups, including Amnesty International, seeking to prevent arms sales to Israel, according to Sky News.
